This calculator functions more like a mini-computer, and with the Internet interface, my daughter will be able to use this for any engineering, math or science class in college. Our vendor was efficient and quick to send us the product.Įven th ough I really didn't want to purchase yet another calculator, I am extremely pleased with my purchase. On the TI-89 Titanium, x4 7x2 + 1 will look like x4. On most other calculators, x4 7x2 +1 would look like x4 7x2+1. Pretty print is the option to display symbolic mathematics in the format that you would normally use when writing mathematics. I also found out that it has AP Calculus test questions pre-loaded on it, which will be useful at the end of this school year. One of the nicest things about the TI-89 calculator is the fact that it uses Pretty Print. It has many other features that you download easily from the Internet to do other types of functions, such as finances, statistics, and an organizer (to name a few). It works beautifully and will (I hope) be useful for my daughter through her college years. The calculator is a very cool piece of technology. I was not exactly pleased that I would have to purchase yet another calculator since we already purchased the TI-83 and TI-84 for previous math courses. My daughter is taking Calculus next year in high school and (of course) the teacher required the students to have the TI-89 calculator. And don't replace this with knowledge, you still need to know the basics in your head in order to succeed in the class! Read full review My overall opinion: If you are planning on taking a Calculus course try to pick up one of these used and become familiar with it because it will seem very foreign at first. Pros: Derivatives, Solving Equations, Low Battery Meter.Ĭons: Price (if purchased new), Graphs can be a little hard to view. Here are some pros and cons that I feel go with this calculator. I have never used the Titanium version but see no downfall to using the original version. This is a great handy tool to check over your work to make sure you have not made any careless errors. This TI-89 does all the busy work for me! I now have more time to work on the actual problem that other stuff such as finding the derivatives and solving equations. It was fine in the beginning but I felt I was wasting a lot of time doing "busy" work. I started my calc class with a TI-83 Plus that I used for all my other math classes. The TI-89 lets you perform the expected functions of an advanced calculatorbasic math, algebra, calculus, graphs, matrices, and statistical functions. Also, the price is not exorbitant, or even much more than the other TI graphing calculators. I would recommend this calculator to anyone that is adept with graphing calculators or needs the extra functionality of the 89. Another thing to note would be that most of the buttons on the TI-89 Titanium are placed differently than on the TI-84 or 83. A second complaint would be about the input, which is sometimes cumbersome, but still effective (the input is no different than that of a TI-84 or 83). My biggest complaint would be that it is NOT BEGINNER FRIENDLY. I am certainly not a beginner with TI calculators, but sometimes this calculator can still confuses me. The main difference between this one and the TI-nspire is that the nspire has a colored display and a nice input keyboard, however, it lacks the computin g power and 3-d graphing features of the TI-89 Titanium. The screen is black/white but can still produce images with nice contrast. This last function is extremely valuable in multi-variable calculus. It does almost everything I could want it to it solves equations, differentiates, integrates (both definite and indefinite integrals), and graphs in three dimensions-slowly but that's to be expected, it's only a calculator. I've used a TI-84 and TI-83 in the past, and the possible functions of those calculators pale in comparison to the TI-89 Titanium. Its functionality and computing power are astounding. I bought this calculator for my advanced level Calculus and Physics courses. Thank you archive dot org, this gives me flexibility and prevents NOMOphobia with my ‘89, which I otherwise always carry with me at work or at school.Astounding functionality and computing power! But not beginner-friendly. Here’s a tutorial to get everything out of it: Ĭheck out the Planet Money episode on graphing calculators, and why after 20 years the TI-89 is still the top of the line graphing calculator, for the same price: Only wish was that it was backlit, or that this MAME was for the Titanium edition (it has electrical engineering formulas as well as supports implicit differentiation) If you are in STEM, pick up a TI-89 used. I remember playing Tetris and even Doom on this in high school. When professors want you to spend $150+ on a textbook, just ask yourself, “Will it have as much utility as a TI-89? For twenty+ years?” Probably not. The best $100 I have ever spent, amortized it’s a penny a day. I am currently studying math undergrad with it. I bought this calculator in 2001 for AP Calc AB (and SAT) and have used it daily now for twenty years.
